VineMEMZ Is MEMZ With No Warnings and Even More Chaos

VineMEMZ.exe

If MEMZ is the famous meme virus, VineMEMZ is its crazier brother. It was made by the same creator as a gift for one streamer, it’s full of inside jokes from his community, and, unlike the original, it doesn’t warn you before it starts wrecking your PC. I tested it on Windows 11 and it was pure chaos.

Never run VineMEMZ on a real PC. It overwrites the start of your hard drive just like MEMZ, and it doesn’t even ask first. I only test it in isolated systems I can throw away. See how I test malware safely.

A gift for Vinesauce Joel

In 2016, Vinesauce Joel (Joel Johansson, a streamer famous for destroying virtual Windows PCs with viewer-sent malware) ran the original MEMZ live on stream. The video blew up and made MEMZ famous everywhere.

To thank him, Leurak, the creator of MEMZ, made a special edition just for Joel: VineMEMZ. Instead of general internet memes, it’s full of references to Vinesauce and Joel’s own streams. Later it was released to the public, and it has become a classic in malware testing videos.

There’s no official documentation for VineMEMZ, so some of these details come from the community and from testing it myself.

My test: VineMEMZ on Windows 11

I ran VineMEMZ inside Windows Sandbox, a disposable virtual Windows that comes with Windows 11 Pro. Everything inside it is deleted when you close it, which makes it perfect for this kind of test:

VineMEMZ filling a Windows Sandbox window with a glitched, repeating tunnel of images in pink, blue and yellow
A frame from my VineMEMZ test in Windows Sandbox on Windows 11. The screen tunnel effect is way more intense than in the original MEMZ.Frame from my own video.

The missing warnings are the most dangerous part. With the original MEMZ you have to say “yes” twice, so at least you know what you’re doing. VineMEMZ starts right away, so if someone renames it to something innocent like a game or a “free” program, the PC is gone before you realise.

What it does

Under the hood it’s the same as MEMZ, just turned up. The boot record is overwritten right at the start, so the disk is already lost before anything shows up on screen. Then the show begins: images from Vinesauce streams, screen tunnels, inverted colours and glitches pile up much faster than in the original, along with the sounds, pop-ups and random programs. If you try to kill it, Windows crashes with a blue screen and never starts again.

Staying safe from it

VineMEMZ needs administrator rights to touch the disk, so the UAC prompt is the last moment you can stop it: never click Yes for a program you don’t trust. Microsoft Defender detects MEMZ and its variants instantly, so keep it on, and be careful with “funny” or “prank” programs people send you on Discord or in game communities, because that’s exactly how joke malware spreads.

If you want to see it for yourself, watch a video like mine, or use Windows Sandbox or a virtual machine with no personal files. And if it already ran, your files are probably still on the disk: follow the recovery steps in my MEMZ article before reinstalling Windows.
